Ceramics Syllabus
Welcome to T.H.S. Ceramics!
The ceramic arts program offers students comprehensive art experiences with detailed explorations in clay building techniques such as coil, pinch pots, slab building and introduction to wheel throwing. In addition to gaining confidence they will gain proficiency working with clay, glazes and surface treatments. Students will learn about art history, analysis, aesthetics, design concepts and interpretation of art.
A little about me...
I worked as a professional artist until 2009 when I became a fine arts teacher. I have worked in mediums including photography, graphic design, painting, drawing, ceramics and recycled fashion design. When I am not at school, I enjoy teaching painting classes, being outdoors, eating (especially on taco Tuesdays), off-roading, paddle boarding, outings, and spending time with family and friends.
Student Expectations
Students will be expected to adhere to the Positive School-Wide Behavior Expectations and Code of Conduct

The ceramics classroom also adheres to the following:
Grading
Students will earn credit by demonstrating proficiency of California State Standards for Visual Arts through:
Studio work, Daily assignments, Research & Presentations, Assessments, Projects, Final Portfolio (website), Weekly Planner/ Notes/ Sketches
Grades will be determined through the use of rubrics to assess all projects and assignments. These will include student self-assessments as well as instructor & peer assessments.
All class material will be posted on the website through Google Classroom. The grading scale will follow the HUSD grading policies. Grades and attendance will we posted on Aeries.
Grades will be determined by a 4 point scale. Categories will be aligned with standards.
Late work will not be accepted after the triad grading period end date.

Supplies:
Supplies will be provided to students. These will be checked out to each student and stored in class. Students will be responsible to return all supplies at the end of the semester, complete and in good condition. Students may choose to provide their own supplies. Visit the website for links to items.
IF STUDENTS CHOOSE TO BRING THIER OWN SUPPLIES, they will need the following:
• Clay tool set (Amazon or Hobby Lobby) or order on Amazon.
• Gallon Zip-lock Bags (2-3)
• Plastic storage container (shoe box sized)
Optional but Recommended:
• Rolling pin, wood dowels (1 1/2", and two 3/8") or wood yardstick
• Piece of canvas or old pillowcase (to roll clay on)
• Apron (May also be purchased at the THS student store)

The ceramics classroom also adheres to the following:
- Being on time means being in your seat with your phone, and backpack parked before the bell rings.
- Being prepared is having your planner out, writing the days agenda at the start of class. Have your ID out, and charged Chromebook, or current project and tools out, ready to learn.
- Being respectful includes being on time, not throwing clay (or anything) at any time, not touching another’s work, following all ceramics classroom procedures, using respectful language and following teacher instruction.
- Being responsible includes active participation, being on task, cleaning up after yourself and returning all items clean to their proper places at the end of each class. Be aware of your grade and progress in class. Seek help when needed. Sign up with Mrs. Estoch for intervention and or Saturday School when you need tutoring.
- As stated above, cell phones are not to be out or visible in class (unless being used for instructional activities with the direction of the teacher.)
